Federal Agencies Warn Local Law Enforcement For Potential Copycats In Wake Of New Orleans Terror Attack

The federal government is issuing concerns to local law enforcement about potential "copycat" attacks following the New Orleans incident. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have circulated a joint intelligence bulletin to the nation's 18,000 law enforcement agencies. This bulletin was issued as a precautionary measure to alert authorities nationwide about the possibility of individuals attempting to emulate the devastating ramming and shooting attack in New Orleans on New Year's Day 2025. The bulletin specifically highlights the increased risk of vehicle-based attacks, which have been promoted by ISIS as a low-tech method for mass casualty incidents since 2014.

The recent surge in ISIS propaganda encouraging such attacks, particularly in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict that began in October 2023, has heightened these concerns. The bulletin includes guidance for law enforcement on identifying warning signs of potential attacks and emphasizes vigilance against such threats.

The New Orleans attack, carried out by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who pledged allegiance to ISIS, involved a pickup truck ramming into pedestrians on Bourbon Street, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and gunfire. This act of terrorism resulted in 14 fatalities and dozens of injuries. Federal authorities are actively investigating Jabbar's background and connections while urging the public to report any relevant information. This proactive federal response underscores the importance of coordination between federal, state, and local agencies to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety.
