Governor Brian P. Kemp has declared a statewide State of Emergency in Georgia, effective immediately through Tuesday, January 14, 2025, in preparation for a significant winter storm expected to impact the state beginning Friday. The declaration comes as meteorologists predict a mix of snow, freezing rain, and ice across much of north and central Georgia, with potentially hazardous travel conditions

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the northern half of Georgia from 7 a.m. Friday, January 10, through 7 a.m. Saturday, January 11. The storm is expected to bring:

  • 3 to 6 inches of snow in the North Georgia mountains
  • 2 to 4 inches of mixed precipitation, including snow, freezing rain, and ice, in Atlanta and its suburbs
  • Temperatures near or just below freezing from Friday morning through Saturday evening
  • Potential for a few inches of snow and one-quarter inch of ice accumulation across much of north Georgia and parts of central Georgia

Governor Kemp has activated the State Operations Center and mobilized various state agencies to address potential impacts. Key actions include:

  • Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) crews beginning to brine roads on Thursday, focusing on areas north of and along I-20
  • The Motor Carrier Compliance Division partnering with GDOT to escort brining operations
  • Department of Public Safety troopers and officers on standby for weather-related service calls
  • Suspension of hours-of-service limitations for commercial vehicle operators involved in response activities

Governor Kemp is urging all Georgians to limit travel during the storm3. Additional measures include:

  • Closure of state offices in areas expected to be impacted by the winter weather on Friday
  • Encouragement for residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in the most affected areas
  • Advice to give ample space to GDOT crews treating and clearing roads

State officials have provided several preparedness tips for residents:

  • Use electric space heaters with automatic shut-off switches
  • Keep heat sources at least three feet away from furniture and drapes
  • Insulate homes and seal doors and windows
  • Check and install working carbon monoxide detectors
  • Prepare backup heat sources and emergency kits
  • Ensure vehicles are winter-ready with proper antifreeze, brakes, heater, and tire checks

As the storm approaches, Georgians are advised to stay weather-aware and monitor updates from local National Weather Service offices and reliable media outlets. The State of Emergency will remain in effect until Tuesday, January 14, 2025, allowing for a coordinated response to the winter weather event.
