Coalition Calls for Arrest of Man Seen Tearing Up Tents at Homeless Encampment in Atlant

     A recent incident in Atlanta has sparked widespread outrage and calls for action from community leaders and activists. A video circulating on social media shows a man, identified as Danielle Barnett, also known as "Davinci," slashing tents at a homeless encampment near Ebenezer Baptist Church in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. The encampment is the same location where Cornelius Taylor was tragically killed by a city vehicle earlier this year.

     The video depicts Barnett, wearing an "enforcement" shirt, using a cutting tool to destroy multiple tents while demanding that they be removed from the street. Residents of the encampment reported that Barnett appeared to be armed and claimed he did not work for the city, despite his attire suggesting otherwise. The incident has left many in the community feeling threatened and fearful for their safety.

     Community activists, including Mawuli Davis, who represents Taylor's family, held a news conference to condemn the actions and demand immediate arrest and accountability. Davis emphasized that the homeless individuals deserve protection and the right to live in peace without being terrorized. Reverend Nolan English of Traveling Grace Ministries expressed concern over the city's approach to homelessness, stating, "We were known as the city too busy to hate. Right now, we’re looking like a city too busy to love".

    The Atlanta Police Department has issued warrants for Danielle Barnett on charges of property damage. Barnett, a 42-year-old security guard from the Auburn area, has no affiliation with the City of Atlanta or its police department. The General Crimes Unit is handling the investigation, and police have confirmed that Barnett acted alone.

     The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Atlanta's homeless population, which has seen a 7% increase in recent years. Economic instability, lack of affordable housing, and barriers to accessing shelter services are among the primary drivers of homelessness in the city. Despite efforts to address these issues, the situation remains critical, with thousands of individuals living without stable shelter.
