Energy Assistance Program Open Now For Low Income Households

The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) has announced the opening of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for cooling assistance. This program is designed to help low-income households manage their energy bills and mitigate health and safety risks associated with extreme temperatures.

Seniors aged 65 and older, as well as medically homebound individuals, are eligible to apply starting April 1, 2025. All other eligible Georgians can begin applying on May 1, 2025. To qualify, a household's annual income must be at or below 60% of Georgia's median income. For example, a household of one must earn $33,038 or less annually, while a household of five must earn $73,700 or less. Applicants are required to provide proof of income, citizenship, Social Security numbers for all household members, and their most recent cooling bill or energy provider statement.

Applications are processed through local Community Action Agencies (CAAs) on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted. Interested individuals should contact their local CAA to schedule an appointment before applying. Local agencies can be found by visiting georgiacaa.org or by calling 404-657-3426.

The program provides assistance directly to energy suppliers to help cover cooling costs. Additional services may include energy crisis assistance and minor energy-related home repairs for eligible households. As funding is limited, early application is encouraged to ensure assistance before resources are depleted.

For more information or help with the application process, visit the Georgia DHS website or reach out to your local Community Action Agency.
