A devastating tornado struck Henry County on Thursday afternoon, destroying a home and seriously injuring two people who were thrown from the structure. According to initial reports, an 18-year-old was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition following the incident.
The National Weather Service confirmed a radar-indicated tornado near Blacksville, close to McDonough, at approximately 3:34 p.m., moving northeast at about 10 mph. Tornado warnings were issued for south central Henry County, urging residents to seek shelter immediately as the severe weather unfolded. The warning was lifted by 3:45 p.m., but not before significant damage had already occurred.
The tornado’s impact was severe, with strong winds tearing apart homes and uprooting trees. In one tragic case, two individuals were ejected from their residence as the structure was destroyed. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and the 18-year-old was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital, a facility well-known for its trauma care and previous experience in treating tornado victims. The condition of the second individual has not yet been disclosed.
Recent severe weather in the region has led to multiple tornadoes and widespread damage. Earlier this week, tornadoes were confirmed in Carroll, Coweta, Spalding, and Butts counties, with reports of homes and trailers being lifted and slammed to the ground. Fortunately, previous storms did not result in serious injuries, but Thursday’s event marked a more severe outcome.
Authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage in Henry County and urge residents to remain vigilant as the threat of severe weather persists into the weekend. The National Weather Service has forecasted additional storm risks for the area, with the potential for damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.
