Authorities are investigating after a burned body was found Saturday morning near the top of Stone Mountain in DeKalb County. The grim discovery was made by a hiker shortly before 8:20 a.m. in a secluded area under some trees, just to the right of the Summit Skyride, according to park police. The hiker immediately called 911, prompting a swift response from Stone Mountain Park Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who are now leading the inquiry.
Officials have confirmed the victim is a man, but his identity has not yet been released. The body was located under an overhang in a remote part of the park, an area not commonly frequented by visitors. Park police described the scene as unusual and are urging the person who made the initial discovery to contact authorities again, as they did not leave contact information during the first call.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Stone Mountain Park remains open to the public, though officials have indicated that this could change depending on the circumstances as more information becomes available. The body will be sent to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and to determine the cause and manner of death.
Law enforcement is asking anyone with information about the incident or who may have seen suspicious activity in the area to come forward as they work to piece together what led to this disturbing find
