Between GA-Between Community News has since its inception in 2021 stood as a voice for the voiceless, dedicating its platform to advocating for the welfare of animals—both pets and livestock—throughout Walton County, Georgia. Our unwavering commitment is rooted in the belief that every animal, whether a beloved companion or a stray in need, deserves compassion, respect, and a chance at a better life.
Walton County is fortunate to have a robust network of organizations and individuals working tirelessly to protect and care for animals. These groups not only provide safe havens for abandoned and homeless animals but also champion responsible pet ownership and humane treatment for all creatures. Their collective efforts are transforming the landscape of animal welfare in our community.
Founded in 2023, the Humane Society of Walton County is the county’s only non-profit, brick-and-mortar animal shelter. Created in response to high euthanasia rates, the Humane Society works closely with Walton County Animal Control to increase lifesaving efforts and move the county toward a no-kill status. Their shelter offers a sanctuary for homeless pets, featuring enrichment-focused facilities and a commitment to keeping animals until they find loving homes. The Humane Society also operates a Community Cat Program, which humanely manages the stray cat population through trap-neuter-return initiatives, and provides vital education and resources to local pet owners.
Walton County Animal Control operates an open-intake shelter in Monroe, serving as the primary facility for stray, lost, and abandoned animals. Their mission extends beyond public safety—they work diligently to re-home adoptable pets and safeguard animals from inhumane treatment. Adoption fees are kept low and include vaccinations and spay/neuter services, making pet adoption accessible for more families. Animal Control officers are known for their compassionate approach, often providing resources and assistance to residents rather than citations, and working to reunite lost animals with their families.
Since 2007, Walton Animal Guild has played a vital role in promoting the humane treatment of pets and ending the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. WAG collaborates with local rescue groups, fosters, and the county shelter to find homes for pets. Their initiatives include financial assistance for spay/neuter procedures, a community pet food pantry, and educational outreach to prevent pet overpopulation and animal abuse. Notably, their “Huts for Mutts” program provides free dog houses to those in need, ensuring that even outdoor pets have shelter and comfort.
The combined efforts of these organizations have a profound impact on the fabric of Walton County. By rescuing, sheltering, and rehoming abandoned animals, they not only save lives but also enrich the lives of local families and foster a culture of empathy and responsibility. Their work helps reduce stray populations, prevent animal suffering, and build a stronger, more compassionate community.
Between Community News remains committed to shining a light on these efforts, encouraging residents to support, volunteer, and advocate for our forgotten animals. Whether through adopting a pet, fostering, donating, or simply spreading awareness, every action makes a difference. Together, we can ensure that every animal in Walton County is given the love, care, and second chance they so deeply deserve
